COVID-19 is a disease that can affect many organs and organ systems other than the lungs. These include the cardiovascular system, the kidneys, the liver and the central nervous system. In addition to the disease itself, the sometimes very invasive therapy (such as treatment in intensive care for several days or prolonged ventilation) can also put a strain on the body and the psyche.
Leading symptoms are, among others:
- Persistent breathing difficulties up to and including shortness of breath
- Muscle weakness
- Lack of resilience in everyday life
- Fatigue, or unusual exhaustion
- Concentration problems
- Cardiovascular complaints
Psychological symptoms such as increased anxiety or depressed mood also play an important role.
These leading symptoms can occur during the infection, directly after the disease or even months later – even in initially uncomplicated and in milder courses of COVID-19.
Usually, these symptoms last only a few weeks, but in some people they last for months. This clinical picture is also called long COVID syndrome.
